Frequently asked plumbing

questions

Why is my geyser not heating?

Geyser not heating can be due to a few reasons. The most common reasons are a faulty thermostat. Other causes could be a faulty geyser timer, a burnt connection on the circuit as well a faulty geyser element.

Why do I have a high water bill?

A high water bill can be due to a number of issues. It can be due to a hidden burst water pipe on the property. As well as a faulty valve at your geyser. Another cause and most probably the most common is the toilet constantly filling.

Why do my taps and plumbing make noise?

A thumping or whining noise on a plumbing system is an issue that is quite common in new developments. Most causes of these issues range from faulty valves at the geyser to worn-out washers or tap mechanisms. Another common cause is improperly saddled pipework in the roof or walls.

Why is there a smell in my bathroom?

A sewerage smell in a bathroom or home is a common issue caused by improper venting on a sewerage system, worn-out seals on the drainage pipes in the bathroom or it can indicate that your drains are either partially blocked or completely blocked.

Where do I turn off the water to my geyser or home?

All properties by council law require them to have a shut-off tap in the property that shuts off the property’s water supply. In most cases, this tap is in line with the city’s water meter on the inside of the property boundary wall. The geyser shut off also as per regulation will be installed on the water feed to the geyser. This is located at the geyser.

Why do my drains keep blocking?

Blocked drains are never a great experience and they are caused by a lot of factors, the most common causes are roots, fats, wet wipes, or excessive and improper toilet paper being used at the toilet. A drain that continuously blocks normally indicates a more serious issue is at play. Some of these common problems are. Collapsed drainage, large-scale build-up on pipe walls, severe root ingress into the drainage system which is also linked to collapsed drainage. Another cause of continuous blockages is improper installation of the drainage system. If the drainage system has been installed incorrectly this results in continuous drainage issues. Improper cutting and joining of the pipes in the system can create rough edges in the line internally that catch and trap matter in the drain. This builds up and then blocks the system. Another common improper installation cause is if the drainage was not installed with the correct fall on the line, the fall is indicated by regulation. Improper fall means the drain never flows correctly causing build-ups and blockages as well as constant smell and venting issues.

Frequently asked electrical questions

Why do my lights keep tripping?

There are a few possible reasons. You may have a loose Live or Neutral in your circuit and the continuous arching causes it to trip.

Another reason might be that your light or light fitting is faulty and that will cause your circuit breaker to trip.

Why do my lights not switch off when I try and switch it off?

Your circuit may be getting a back feed on your Neutral. This means your Neutral circuit is not “clean”. It may also be due to your dimmer switch being faulty.

Why does my plug circuit keeptripping?

Frequently asked gas questions

What is LPG Gas?

LPG is an acronym for liquefied petroleum gas. This flammable substance is made up of propane, butane, and isobutane.

What is LPG Gas Used For?

LPG is most commonly used for heating purposes such as spatial heating, water heating and cooking in residential and commercial environments.

Is Gas Safe to Use?

Gas is extremely safe to use. However, the safety of gas ultimately depends on the following:

  • All the necessary guidelines were followed during installation, including the issue of a gas compliance certificate
  • Regular repair and maintenance are carried out on the cylinder and its components as well as the gas appliance

LPG is a clean-burning substance which cannot burn without air and therefore the flame can never travel backwards into the cylinder.

When do I need a gas compliance certificate?

Many people have the opinion that if you have a small bottle connected to your appliance you don’t need a certificate of compliance. This is in fact untrue.

The regulations SANS 10087 – 1 state that any fixed appliance (that does not fall under the portable appliance regulations) which is connected to a gas bottle, irrespective of the amount or size of that bottle, that home must have a gas compliance certificate.

Also if there is a change in ownership of such property that has LPG in that home, a certificate of compliance needs to be issued before transfer of that property can be completed

Can I Refill the Gas Cylinder Myself?

Absolutely not. Gas cylinders are pressurised, making them dangerous to refill if you are not a qualified technician using specialised tools and equipment to do the job.

Always take your empty cylinder to a registered gas supplier to have it refilled safely.
